What to Expect in Therapy

Starting therapy can bring up a mix of emotions—hope, uncertainty, maybe even a little fear. If you’re here, it likely means you’re ready for something to shift. Whether you’re feeling stuck in old patterns, navigating trauma, or simply longing for more clarity and connection in your life and relationships, I want you to know: you’re not alone.

Therapy with me is a collaborative, affirming process. It’s not about fixing you—because1 you’re not broken. It’s about creating a space where you feel safe enough to explore, supported enough to grow, and empowered enough to reclaim your story and make meaningful change.

A collaborative, compassionate space to reconnect with yourself

Before anything else, we start with a free 15-minute phone call. This is a low-pressure space where you can share a bit about what’s bringing you in and ask any questions you have. It’s also a chance for us to get a sense of how it feels to connect. Therapy is personal, and finding someone who feels like the right fit matters.

If it feels like we’re aligned, we’ll schedule your first full session.

Step 1: Schedule a Free Consultation Call

The first few sessions are about building a foundation. I’ll invite you to share more about your history, what’s currently going on, and what you’re hoping for. We’ll talk about your relationships, how you tend to respond to stress, and what feels most important for you to work on.

This isn’t a rushed “tell me everything” situation. We go at your pace. My goal is to understand you—not just your symptoms, but your story, your strengths, and how your experiences have shaped the way you move through the world.

Step 2: The Intake Process – Slowing Down to Get to Know You

There’s no one-size-fits-all plan here. Your therapy will be shaped by your needs, your comfort level, and your goals. Some sessions may feel focused and practical, others slower and more reflective. Sometimes there’s laughter. Sometimes there are tears. All of it is welcome.

Our work might include:

  • Exploring patterns in relationships that feel painful or stuck
  • Understanding how trauma lives in the body—and finding ways to feel safer and more regulated
  • Identifying the protective parts of you that helped you survive, and supporting you as you shift toward new ways of being
  • Developing skills to set boundaries, express emotions, or navigate conflict
  • Gently revisiting past experiences that still hold emotional weight, using tools like EMDR when appropriate

I’ll always explain the why behind what we’re doing, and we’ll check in often to make sure our work continues to feel aligned and supportive.

Step 3: Creating a Personalized Approach That Feels Right for You

As therapy unfolds, you may begin to:

  • Understand yourself with more clarity and compassion
  • Recognize and shift patterns that once felt automatic
  • Reclaim your voice and begin making choices that feel true to who you are
  • Experience more ease, connection, and confidence in your relationships
  • Build self-trust and a stronger sense of internal safety

Therapy isn’t just about gaining insight—it’s about integration. That might mean practicing a boundary, responding to triggers in new ways, or learning to sit with emotion instead of running from it.

Progress isn’t linear—and that’s okay. Together, we’ll hold space for both the hard and hopeful parts of healing. Growth here doesn’t mean doing more or being better—it means coming home to yourself, just as you are.

Step 4: Building Insight and Taking Meaningful Action

You don’t have to figure everything out before reaching out. All you need is a willingness to begin.

Let’s talk and see if working together feels like the right fit. I’d be honored to support you.

You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

Ultimately, my goal as your therapist is to help you reclaim your story, heal from past wounds, and build relationships and a life you genuinely love.
